Highmark Health is contributing $35 million to help develop a student health, wellness and athletics center at Carnegie Mellon University, the Downtown-based insurer and health system announced Thursday.
The 160,000-square-foot building, which will cost an estimated $100 million, will combine student wellness and intercollegiate athletics services under one roof on the university’s Oakland campus. The completion date is 2024 and the balance of construction costs will come from university resources and fundraising.
The project, which will be built at Tech and Margaret Morrison streets, will include a building addition and enhancements to Skibo Gymnasium.
University Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services and CMU’s intercollegiate athletics program will be housed in the building, which will face Schenley Park.
In 2013, CMU and Highmark created a research partnership that resulted in the company investing of $16 million for an endowed faculty position at the university and support for CMU’s Disruptive Health Technology Institute.
