Somerset Hospital’s board of directors voted Thursday to pursue an affiliation agreement with UPMC.
The 118-bed hospital had been looking for a partner for a year or two to make it easier to recruit doctors and pay for equipment and facility upgrades. Somerset Hospital opened in 1921 as a 20-bed facility.
The goal is to complete the deal, which would integrate Somerset into the UPMC system, by year’s end.
Highmark subsidiary Allegheny Health Network provides cancer care services at Somerset, but AHN was not among the bidders for the hospital. Last year, the Somerset board requested affiliation proposals from larger health systems.
