Facing major renovation costs at the South Side facility, Pittsburgh health system UPMC will be moving outpatient surgery services from the UPMC Mercy South Side Outpatient Center to UPMC Mercy, UPMC Montefiore and other locations around July 1.
The walk-in clinic as well as rehabilitation services, Quest Diagnostics and radiological imaging will remain at the Mary Street location for now while the health system scouts other South Side locations for the clinic and other nonsurgical services currently offered at the outpatient center.
No decision has been made regarding any longer-term plans for the building, which sits on a 4.83-acre lot.
On Monday, UPMC spokeswoman Susan Manko said that UPMC “will work with South Side community leaders to determine an appropriate use for the UPMC Mercy South Side Outpatient Center building.”
She added that they estimate the aging facility needs at least $10 million in infrastructure improvements. According to the Allegheny County real estate website, UPMC paid $8.5 million for South Side Hospital in 1996.
