Brooklyn company plans to build steel plant in Aliquippa

A Brooklyn-based company is planning to build a state-of-art steel manufacturing plant in Aliquippa.

According to its website, 72 Steel will invest $218 million in the nearly 44-acre site. Pennsylvania Department of State records show 72 Steel registered with the state in June 2022 and listed its address as 611 Woodlawn Road, Aliquippa, site of the former Jones & Laughlin/LTV steel mill.

The company said the plant “will use the world's most advanced steel production technology, with an annual output of 500,000 tons of high-end steel production capacity.” It said the products it will produce include rebar and those widely used in construction.

Company officials previously met with local officials and toured the site. They noted it has “convenient transportation, developed railways, highways, waterways, and abundant power supply.”

After the tour, Lin Huabin, president of 72 Steel, “said that he was very happy to set up a factory in Pittsburgh, which is the ‘steel capital’ of the United States,” according to the website.

The property owner, Chuck Betters, said 72 Steel has not closed on the land, but he is optimistic a deal will be signed soon.

“It’s a big deal for Beaver County,” he said Saturday morning. “It’s a lot of job creation, steel jobs. It’s a very big deal. I’m rooting for them that they can pull this off.”
