Right now, you can’t get to San Francisco from Pittsburgh nonstop. But you can get to 14 destinations in Florida — with another on the way.
Allegiant Air will be starting a twice weekly service to Melbourne Orlando International Airport on Nov. 11. The flight will operate mainly on Thursdays and Sundays.
It represents the first nonstop to Melbourne in the airport’s history, Pittsburgh International spokesman Bob Kerlik said.
Airlines currently fly to a host of other destinations in Florida, including Orlando, Tampa Bay, Jacksonville, Miami, Key West and Sarasota/Bradenton. Melbourne will make number 15.
It’s easy to see why. In April, about 34% of all of the airport’s passengers traveled to or from the Sunshine State.
Allegiant already serves Orlando-Sanford with a twice weekly flight from Pittsburgh. It also flies to seven other cities, including Jacksonville, Key West, West Palm Beach, Punta Gorda, Sarasota/Bradenton and St. Petersburg.
Overall, the ultra low-cost airline serves 18 destinations from the Steel City, with five of those announced this year alone, according to the Allegheny County Airport Authority, which operates Pittsburgh International. It is the sixth largest carrier from the airport in terms of traffic.
One-way introductory fares to Melbourne will start at $49. Flights can be booked at Allegiant.com. United Airlines, meanwhile, is scheduled to resume a nonstop to San Francisco on Sept. 8, Mr. Kerlik said.
