Medical robotics facility headed to new buildings slated for the Strip

Oxford Development Co. has landed its first tenant for the second phase of its popular 3 Crossings project in the Strip District.

Smith & Nephew, a medical technology company currently located at 2828 Liberty Ave. in the Strip, will be moving into The Stacks in 2020, when the first two new buildings now being erected are completed.

According to an Oxford Development release, Smith & Nephew will be opening "a world-class R&D and medical education training facility for robotics," tripling the floor space for its robotics business. It currently has about 100 employees in the Strip.

“Pittsburgh is the R&D headquarters of our rapidly expanding robotics business and we are very excited to be the first tenants at The Stacks at 3 Crossings," said Brian McKinnon, Smith & Nephew vice president, R&D robotics and surgical enablers.

"This state-of-the art facility will be a key innovation center for Smith & Nephew that will provide an engaging environment for both current and prospective new employees to create next generation surgical robotic platforms."

The new facility is expected to focus on robotics and will enable both expansion of the company's NAVIO Surgical System and the development of next-generation products. It also will serve as a state-of-the-art medical training center focused on robotics.

Smith & Nephew will be the latest tech firm to settle at 3 Crossings. Others include Apple and Argo AI.

At full build out, The Stacks — located on 11 acres framed by Railroad and Smallman and 28th and 29th streets — will include about 600,000 square feet of office space spread over six buildings, 300 residential units in two buildings, and 50,000 square feet of retail.

It will supplement the $210 million 3 Crossings project, which includes four office buildings, a 300-unit apartment complex, and a 590-space parking garage.
