The owner of Ross Park Mall has plans for the location where the Sears store has been emptying out this year.
Simon Property Group, which also owns South Hills Village, announced a planned redevelopment that will include a new dining hall, new stores and entertainment on the site.
Construction on the site will begin in January 2019 and the project should be completed in the summer of 2020, according to the announcement on Monday.
“We are excited to redevelop the former Sears’s store with uses that will benefit the community and the existing retailers in these properties,” said Michael E. McCarty, chief operating officer, Simon Malls, in the announcement.
Ross Park Mall is also anchored by a Nordstrom location, as well as Macy’s and J.C. Penney.
Earlier this year, Sears Holdings Corp. said it would close more than 100 stores, including the store at Ross Park Mall, as the struggling department store chain tries to turn around its business.
At that time, the Hoffman Estates, Ill.-based company said 64 Kmart stores and 39 Sears stores would close between early March and early April. The Ross Park Mall location, which in recent weeks has been offering the store fixtures for sale, was slated to close in early April. Also included in the January closing announcement were Kmart stores in Bridgeville, Hermitage and Franklin.
