Paints and coatings maker PPG said it will donate 80,000 medical masks to hospitals in Pittsburgh and elsewhere to assist those treating patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The N95 surgical face masks were sourced from several manufacturers who are PPG suppliers, including 3M, Honeywell and others, said PPG spokeswoman Greta Edgar.
Of the total, 20,000 were distributed on Wednesday and Thursday to UPMC and Allegheny Health Network hospitals in the Pittsburgh region, she said.
Another 10,000 are targeted for hospitals in the New York City area, which has the largest number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the U.S.
The remaining 50,000 includes additional masks to be distributed to UPMC and AHN facilities; masks for Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals in Cleveland; and masks for two hospitals in Michigan, and two hospitals in Alabama.
PPG has operations in all of those locations.
The company is partnering with General Motors to distribute some of the masks to medical facilities in the Detroit area.
GM and other automakers are major customers of PPG.
“PPG is proud to support the medical community as they courageously continue their work on the frontlines of this global pandemic,” said Michael H. McGarry, PPG’s chairman and chief executive officer.
