Jewish Family & Children's Service of Pittsburgh hired Bari Benjamin as psychotherapist and Kelly Cahill as foster care and adoption case worker.

Michael J. Gentile joined Gregg Protection Services Inc. as director of business development.

Utilities

As part of its Back-to-Basics strategy, which involves a more concentrated focus on its core business, Duquesne Light, the DQE Inc. name is being phased out, although its shares will continue to trade as "DQE" on the New York Stock Exchange. In conjunction with the name change, Duquesne Light also announced a realignment of its senior management team. Victor A. Roque, who served as Duquesne Light president, has announced his retirement. Morgan K. O'Brien, current president and chief executive officer of DQE, will assume that role at Duquesne Light. Joining Maureen L. Hogel, chief administrative officer, as senior vice presidents are: Joseph G. Belechak, chief operations officer; Stevan R. Schott, chief financial officer; and James E. Wilson, chief strategic officer. Hogel also will serve as chief legal officer.

Pittsburgh native Larry Nelson was named senior vice president and associate general counsel, development, Wendy's International Inc.

BUSINESS NOTES

Streamline Communications and GE Retail Sales Finance have launched a national private label credit card program, "Lifestyle Choices," offering instant credit to participating optical retailer customers. The program is being launched in cooperation with the Optical Laboratories Association, whose participating member laboratories will enroll doctors and dispensers. The eye care practice submits a short application and, upon approval, receives support materials and credit card processing terminals from Streamline Communications and GE Retail Sales Finance.

BurghBiz.com has released its Local Business / Coupon Directory, which allows consumers to log on and save money on all of their favorite products. BurghBiz.com also offers low-cost advertising solutions for businesses in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas to feature their businesses, as well as their products and services.

Pittsburgh Cut Flower Co. has a marketing partnership with Equiflor Corp., becoming the newest member of the Equiflor Power Partner Program, a strategic alliance with a group of wholesale florists.

NEW BUSINESS/NEW OFFICES

The Burns Group has relocated its local office into larger space at the Penn Center West Complex.

The PMA Insurance Group has relocated its Pittsburgh Branch Office to Two Chatham Center, Suite 600. PMA with an additional 1,500 square feet of space. The PMA Insurance Group, a regional property and casualty organization specializing in workers' compensation and disability insurance, focuses on the needs of mid- and large-size employers.

CONTRACTS

Benjamin Franklin Plumbing has secured new franchises to serve the Pittsburgh market. The contractors are Joe Lesko of Munhall and Kevin Blanarik of Baden, who both switched from an independent to franchise operator. Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is part of VenVest Inc., headquartered in Sarasota, Fla. VenVest is a holding company whose various operations primarily provide services to residential plumbing and HVAC contractors.

Voest-Alpine Industrieanlagenbau was awarded a contract from voestalpine Austria Draht, a wholly owned company of voestalpine AG, Austria, for the modernization of the wire-coil pickling line at the Leoben/Donawitz plant. The project includes the engineering, manufacture, delivery and complete installation services as well as the modification/upgrade of the process automation systems and comprises a modified pickling, rinsing, activation and phosphate section, a new double-chamber drying furnace, an additional new transport unit and the renewal of the automation system.

Telecommunications Systems Management Inc., a Bridgeville telecommunications company specializing in PBX and Key telephone systems, has recently been informed by the Pennsylvania Department of General Services that PA contract 5805-56, for PBX telephone systems, has been extended until March of 2007, and PA contract 5805-55, for Key and Hybrid telephone systems, has been extended until September 2006. All Pennsylvania State Agencies, local municipalities, and school districts may purchase phone systems and voice mail from these contracts without having to go through an RFP or bidding process.

KLE Management Group has been engaged by the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce to design and develop policy advocacy tools for use with key audiences in advocating positions on business issues impacting Western Pennsylvania. The policy advocacy tools will be used by the Greater Pittsburgh Chamber, its members, allies and partners.

Mascaro Construction Co. LP recently began the general construction contract for the Multi-Modal Transportation Facility at Harrisburg International Airport. Mascaro will construct a double-threaded helix ramp that will provide access to four-levels of parking. The 1.1 million-square-foot garage will have a parking capacity of 2,700 cars, and pedestrian bridges will connect the garage to the AMTRAK station and terminal. The scope of work required under Mascaro's $23 million contract includes placing of all cast-in-place concrete, fit-out of the 12,000-square-foot store-front lobby, construction of the complete building envelope and interior finishes, installation of an underground storm system and access roads leading to the main circulation road.

H.P. srl, a subsidiary of Wabtec Corp., has been awarded a contract by CAF, the longest established rail-car builder in Spain, to supply electric sliding plug doors for new passenger rail vehicles for Metro Rome.

Don's Glass & Mirror Inc. has been awarded the glass and glazing contracts for The Home Depot, Bethel Park, with Torriero Construction and Pennsylvania Air National Guard Operations and Support Buildings with R.A. Glancy & Sons Inc.

Keystone Dedicated Logistics in partnership with Anchor Moving Systems of Milwaukee has been selected by Kohl's Department stores to handle the distribution of new store fixtures to locations throughout the United States.

Windgap Enterprises Inc. is constructing a 10,000- and a 12,000-square-foot light manufacturing/distribution building at its Windgap Park location. Bridges is the general contractor.

PWCampbell has been awarded a design/build contract by KEMBA Financial Credit Union, based in Columbus, Ohio, to construct a new retail branch office in Westerville, Ohio.

Burns & Scalo Roofing Co. announced the roofing contract award for Berenfield Containers. The project includes installation of 51,900 square feet of ballasted EPDM and phenolic deck remediation.

Robert J. Horizon Marketing Communications Inc. received two 2003 Telly Awards for excellence in Non-Network and Cable TV Commercials. Horizon received the 24th Annual Telly Awards for two 30-second commercial spots it created and produced for Sarris Candies Inc.'s Valentine's campaign and Easter campaign.

Carol Mitchell, CEO and president, Verland Foundation, was awarded the Sinclair Broadcasting "Heroes of Human Services Award." The award is presented to individuals and organizations that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the field of human services.

CommuniTech has been selected as a winner in the 2003 American Graphic Design Awards competition by a nationwide panel of judges for its creation of the "Concoman" superhero direct marketing campaign for Conco Systems Inc.

Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania said Inez Miles, a commercial banking vice president and relationship manager for Citizens Bank in Pittsburgh, recently met with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for an awards ceremony. Miles was in London to represent Citizens Bank of Pennsylvania at the Queen's Awards, where The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc, Citizens' parent group, was honored with the prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise 2003.

Susan A. Albrecht, associate dean, student and alumni services and development, University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, received the leadership achievement award from Sigma Theta Tau International, Eta Chapter.

Respironics hosted its 11th Annual Supplier Conference July 29-30, during which four of the suppliers were honored with World Class Supplier awards. James Liken, president and chief executive officer, and Bill Post, homecare division president, spoke about the medical device manufacturer's vision and expectations to the 18 attending suppliers, who represent 65 percent of the homecare division's $215 million in production spending. Rewarded for excellence in the area of Inventory Management, Cost or Quality was Dennis Frampton, president, C & J Industries of Meadville, Crawford County; John Sammut, president and chief executive officer, EPIC Technologies of Norwalk, Ohio; Jack Katilius, business director, Mack Molding, of Inman, S.C.; and Larry Ball, president, Poly-Scientific, of Murphy, N.C.

Ripple Effects Interactive was recently honored by Graphic Design:USA magazine with three 2003 American Graphic Design Awards for its creative work in the multimedia and interactive design and newsletter categories. The winning entries, which were completed on behalf of American Eagle Outfitters, the Canned Food Alliance and the agency itself.

In the newsletter category, Ripple Effects Interactive won for its design of Clothing Apparel, American Eagle Outfitters' internal newsletter for employees. In the multimedia and interactive design category, Ripple Effects Interactive won two awards. One was for the distinguished Web site design produced for the Canned Food Alliance, and the second award was in recognition of the agency's creative demo piece, "Feel the Groove," which targeted marketing professionals in the retail industry.

George T. Reese, lead environmental specialist, GAI Consultants Inc., was certified by the Ecological Society of America Board of Professional Certification as a Certified Ecologist.

Transfusion services of the Blood Bank of Monongahela Valley Hospital have been granted reaccreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks.

Dr. Ulrich L. Rohde, director, Ansoft Corp., received a Marconi Memorial Gold Medal of Achievement form the Veteran Wireless Operators Association for his exemplary achievements in the field of microwave circuit simulation and design.

David E. Noss has received certification as a design professional by the Green Building Council, which promotes leadership through Energy Efficient Design process and technology.

Grove City College chapter of Kappa Delta Pi received an Achieving Chapter Excellence award. The award is presented to five chapters internationally that demonstrate excellence and dedication to the ideals of Kappa Delta Pi.
