The opening of Bedford Springs Resort, which has undergone a $120 million restoration, has been pushed back nearly two weeks, to July 12 from Sunday.
Between 25 to 30 guests who had reservations were told of the delay by hotel staff and changed the dates of their visits to the second weekend of next month, said Keith Evans, a Dallas, Texas, businessman and investor in the project. He said the hotel has not lost business because of the delay, necessitated in part because it's not scheduled to get its final occupancy permit until early next week.
Since its opening in 1804, the Bedford County mountain retreat, famed for its seven mineral springs, attracted affluent East Coast families and hosted seven U.S. presidents. Restoration of the hotel's five guest houses, golf course and gold medal trout stream began in 2005. The state of Pennsylvania spent $40 million on the project and the additional $80 million came from Mr. Evans, Mark Langdale, who is U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica, and John Ferchill of The Ferchill Group in Cleveland.
