“Pose,” the groundbreaking FX television show starring Pittsburgh native Billy Porter, won a Peabody award Thursday afternoon.
The Ryan Murphy show, set in 1980s New York City amid the growing HIV crisis, is set in a world of drag balls and focuses on the families who support each other. Porter, who was nominated for a Golden Globe award earlier this year, plays a character named Pray Tell.
He’s both master of ceremonies at the elaborate queer balls, as well as a father figure to some.
Also nominated for a Peabody this year was “Quest,” a feature-length documentary about Philadelphia’s Rainey family. Turtle Creek native Jon Olshefski spent more than eight years shooting the film.
“Quest” ran on television as part of PBS’s “POV” series last year.
The eight other winners in the category of entertainment were “Barry” (HBO), “The Americans” (FX), “Killing Eve” (BBC America), “Random Acts of Flyness” (HBO), “Patriot Act With Hasan Minhaj” (Netflix), “The End of the F***ing World” (Netflix), “The Good Place” (NBC) and Hannah Gadsby’s “Nanette” special (Netflix).
The 78th awards will be presented May 18 in New York City.
