In honor of what would have been the late Fred Rogers’ 90th birthday, Focus Features has released a trailer for “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” The film is scheduled for limited release in theaters June 8 and is from Morgan Neville, who won an Oscar for his documentary on backup singers, “20 Feet From Stardom.”
“The greatest thing that we can do is to help somebody know that they’re loved and capable of loving,” Mr. Rogers says in voiceover near the end of the roughly 2½-minute trailer. Just try keeping a dry eye as brief clips of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” and the man’s life flash by.
Indeed, after the film debuted at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Hollywood Reporter critic Dan Fienberg wrote, “It’s hard for me to judge ‘Won’t You Be My Neighbor?’ on artistic grounds, because mostly it’s a documentary you want to hug.”
’Tis the season for Fred Rogers tributes. The PBS special “Mister Rogers: It’s You I Like” has been running this month, and a feature film starring Tom Hanks, “You Are My Friend,” is in the works.
