For Mike Super, there’s magic in the airwaves.
Mr. Super, of Peters, will appear Thursday on the Season 4 debut of “Penn & Teller: Fool Us.” Illusionists and “mystifiers,” as Mr. Super prefers to call himself, bring their best hocus-pocus and the iconic team sees whether they can figure out how it’s done.
Hosted by Alyson Hannigan, the show airs at 8 p.m. on The CW.
This isn’t the first time on network television for Mr. Super, who grew up in Clairton as Mike Supernovich. He won the NBC reality show for illusionists, “Phenomenon,” and has been featured on Ellen DeGeneres’ show twice.
Perhaps his biggest audience, however, was for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.” He reached the 2014 semifinals of Season 9, managing to scare the bejeepers out of judge Mel B in the process during one of his appearances.
But his is not a dark, brooding act. Usually dressed in jeans, Mr. Super performs a more family-friendly act. Regardless of whether he winds up fooling Penn & Teller, at least he appears to be on the same aesthetic page.
In a recent interview with AM New York, Penn Jillette stressed the importance of those in the magic trade being able to relate to their audiences.
“There are some idiots who go on TV and say ‘I have real, magical powers,’ and then do a card trick.
“Let’s throw these people out. In this day and age, when everybody yells ‘fake news,’ the most important skill is the skill to determine what is true.
“Magicians deal with that, playfully. They say ‘What appears to be real, may not be.’ ”
