“Hamilton” star Leslie Odom Jr. electrified Broadway audiences on the way to Tony and Grammy awards for his portrayal of Aaron Burr. In October, he will perform with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
The Carnegie Mellon graduate will be in concert at Heinz Hall at 8 p.m. Oct. 20. CMU faculty member Thomas Douglas, who was Mr. Odom’s voice teacher at CMU, will conduct the performance.
Mr. Odom has been in Pittsburgh filming the CBS All Access series “One Dollar” and has quite the recording career going, including a self-titled 2016 album that reached No. 1 on the Billboard Jazz charts. In April, a solo concert aired on the PBS series “Live From Lincoln Center,” and he has added “author” to his resume with the book "Failing Up: How to Take Risks, Aim Higher, and Never Stop Learning" (Feiwel & Friends, $19.99).
Tickets for the concert are $25-$129 at pittsburghsymphony.org or 412-392-4900.
Campfires and Ghostlights: An Evening with Michael Cerveris
Two-time Tony Award-winning Michael Cerveris will perform an intimate, one-night-only benefit performance for barebones productions, with songs from a career that spans Sondheim to rock to his Americana band, Loose Cattle.
Mr. Cerveris is a West Virginia native whose father lives in Pittsburgh. You may know him from Broadway's “Fun Home,” “Assassins” and “Sweeney Todd” along with ties to two comic-book universes: He was seen this summer in Marvel's “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and he had a villainous arc in the Fox TV series "Gotham."
He also has toured in Bob Mould's band, shared stages with Pete Townshend and made Rolling Stone's top 10 country holiday list last year with Loose Cattle.
The 7:30 p.m. reception includes snacks and drinks from Superior Motors. Mr. Cerveris takes the stage at the 70-seat barebones black box theater, 1211 Braddock Ave., Braddock. Tickets are $200 at showclix.com. Barebones next show will be “Lobby Hero” by Kenneth Lonergan, Sept. 28-Oct. 21.
