You know fall isn’t far off when Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre takes to the stage at Hartwood Acres.
The annual “Ballet Under the Stars” performance will be Sunday in the park’s Middle Road concert area in Hampton. Long hailed as the unofficial start to PBT’s season, this will be audiences’ first chance to see the company’s new dancers and veteran artists performing together.
The lineup for the free show includes excerpts from the classical Pirate saga “Le Corsaire” and James Kudelka’s Johnny Cash tribute “The Man in Black.” Corps de ballet member Cooper Verona also will premiere a new work.
Festivities begin at 5 p.m. with cocktails and dinner with PBT staff and dancers, plus food trucks and family-friendly crafts and dance-related activities. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for dinner are $75 for adults, $20 for children ages 12-18 and free for those under 12 at www.pbt.org. All other activities are free.
‘Something Pretty’ at Kelly-Strayhorn
Pittsburgh-based dancer Alexandra Bodnarchuk flexes her choreographic muscle in her new show, “Something Pretty,” which debuts this week at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in East Liberty. The work aims to communicate through movement the mental and emotional struggles associated with eating disorders and the negative stigma that often surrounds those who are battling them. “Something Pretty” strives to shine a light on these struggles and change the conversation.
Show time is 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Pre-sale tickets are $15 at alexandrabodnarchuk.org/tickets, or pay-what-makes-you-happy admission at the door.
