Economic downsizing hasn't put a damper on visual arts programming, which remains promising despite venue adaptations to budget constraints.
Photography reigns at the Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History, with a 160-year exploration of the human subject and continuance of the Charles "Teenie" Harris project at the former, and a poetic look at the diversity of life at the latter. The Andy Warhol Museum takes a spirited look at music and dance in Warhol's work. And the Frick Art Museum shows 17th-century Dutch masterpieces.
Two splendid regional champions of American art celebrate big anniversaries this year, golden at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, and the 90th at The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown.

The 50thThree Rivers Arts Festival returns to Point State Park June 5 and stays through June 14; the 35th Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival will be at Twin Lakes Park east of Greensburg July 2-5; the next Cultural District Gallery Crawl is July 17; and the 40th A Fair in the Park closes the summer season in Mellon Park, Shadyside, Sept. 11-13.
"Matsubara: A Celebration in Pittsburgh" continues through June 7, "Forum 62: Maria Grazia Rosin" through June 28 and "Opera for a Small Room" by Janet Cardiff and George Bures Miller, through July 19. "Digital to Daguerreotype: Photographs of People" opens June 20, followed by "Documenting Our Past: The 'Teenie' Harris Archive Project, Part Three," 205 images selected by the son of the late Pittsburgh photographer, on July 18 (both through Nov. 8). The 99th Annual of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh opens Aug. 29, running through Nov. 8. Pittsburgh-area high school students bring a new interpretation to things Warholian in "Youth Invasion 2009" through June 7. June 13 "Warhol Live: Music and Dance in Andy Warhol's Work" opens with a 7 p.m.- midnight party that includes guest DJ Glenn O'Brien and a 10 p.m. performance by Dean & Britta (opening free; performance $10). A co-production with the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, "Warhol Live" comprises more than 640 works including silkscreens, photographs, films and videos. 412-237-8300.
"The Road to Impressionism: Barbizon Landscapes From the Walters Art Museum" lingers through May 24. Arriving July 11 is "The Dutch Italianates: Seventeenth-Century Masterpieces From Dulwich Picture Gallery, London," 40 paintings from England's oldest public art gallery (through Sept. 20). 412-371-0600.
"Thaddeus Mosley: Sculpture (Studio | Home)" continues through Aug. 2 (program including an artist talk begins at 6:30 tonight, $10). "Gestures: An Exhibition of Small Site-Specific Works," the 12th installment of this eclectic series, guest curated by Katherine Talcott, continues through June 21; look for "Gestures 13" July 31. "Strange Democracy: An Evening With Guillermo Gomez-Pena," the controversial "post-Mexican writer and performance artist," is May 31 (7 p.m., $10). "Beyond Shared Language: Contemporary Art and the Latin American Experience" continues through Aug. 29. "Reflect/Respond: Work by Local Area Students," an exhibition inspired by "Shared Language," will be exhibited at the One Mellon Center satellite gallery May 22- June 22. 412-261-7003.
"The Analytical Eye: Photographs by Aaronel deRoy Gruber" continues through June 27. "Self Portrait: Silver Eye at 30," a group member exhibition that expands upon the theme of the self portrait, follows July 8-Sept. 12. 412-431-1810.
Two photographers explore nature's mysteries in the Filmmakers Galleries, Philomena O'Dea in "Organic Cosmic Mandalas" and Malgorzata Mosiek in "Leaf in the Water." The shows open with a 6-9 p.m. reception June 4 (free) and run through Aug. 16. 412-681-5449.
Continuing through June 21 are "Guided by the Ancestors," story quilts by Tina Williams Brewer, who will speak May 28 and be presented with a PCA Lifetime Achievement Award June 12; "Domestic Landscapes," carpet as a metaphor for landscape by Aasta Deth; "In Between Presence and Absence," a cast paper installation by Sun-Young Kang; and "From Out of This Planet Earth," drawings, collage and books by Encyclopedia Destructica co-director Chris Kardambikis. Ongoing through Aug. 30 are "SALIGIA: Seven Deadly Sins," by Pittsburgh Society of Artists; "Revisiting the Work of Henry B.," a tribute to late sculptor Henry Bursztynowicz, who was PCA 1960 Artist of the Year; "Now From Then," work by Bursztynowicz student W. "The Gift of Art" continues through May 24, followed by a 50th anniversary celebratory weekend May 29-31 that includes special events and tours, a Charm City Cakes replica of the museum, family activities and a Saturday night gala. At Loretto, "In Harmony With Nature II: Photography by Donald M. Robinson," almost 200 images spanning five decades, continues through July 25.
