This week in Pittsburgh, we have a British post-punk legend, the band with 69 songs, and one of the biggest hip-hop shows of the year.
Tuesday
Immersion/SUSS (Tech25 Warehouse): This concert pairs the British electronic duo Immersion (Colin Newman from Wire and Malka Spigel from Minimal Compact) with ambient country trio SUSS. The two forces merged on the new album “Nanocluster, Vol. 3,” which they described as “big sky, new world, Americana cinematic soundscapes.”
SUSS, composed of Pat Irwin (the B-52s, Raybeats, 8 Eyed Spy), Bob Holmes (numun, Rubber Rodeo), and Jonathan Gregg (the Combine, the Linemen), employ pedal steel, mandolin, harmonica and harmonium with synthesizers and loops.
Holmes said in a statement, “When Colin and Malka approached us to collaborate with them on ‘Nanocluster,’ it seemed like a perfect fit. Their use of rhythm, synthesizers, bass and atmospherics felt very complementary to our instrumentation.”
The show is at 112 St. Joseph St., Mount Oliver. 7:30 p.m. $20/$25; tech25.org.
Flore Laurentienne (Andy Warhol Museum): Founder and synth player Mathieu David Gagnon leads this Canadian quintet featuring four string players and offers soothing music made of melodic loops. The opener is the Pittsburgh-based improvised, ambient duo GLO-TREE, featuring GNM (guitar) and Trē Seguritan Abalos (flutes, field recordings). 8 p.m. $25; $20 students; warhol.org.
Wednesday
Gregory Alan Isakov (Stage AE): The mellow indie-folk artist from South Africa, raised in Philadelphia and now living on a small farm in Boulder, Colo., is touring behind 2023’s “Appaloosa Bones,” which AP praised as “a kind of musical morphine.” 7 p.m. doors. Sold out.
Thursday
The Yellowjackets (Greer Cabaret Theater): Just a few days after a visit from Spyro Gyra, Pittsburgh gets another of the big fusion bands with this group that formed in LA in the late ’70s as the backup band for guitarist Robben Ford. They made their album debut in 1981 and have released dozens more since then, including the brand-new “Fasten Up.” The current lineup consists of Russell Ferrante, William Kennedy and Bob Mintzer, with the new addition of Australian bass player Dane Alderson., Downtown. 7 and 9:30 p.m. $45; trustarts.org.
Friday
Tyler, the Creator (PPG Paints Arena): This will be the first Pittsburgh show in six years from the Odd Future rapper, who canceled his Petersen Events Center show in 2022 after posting that the venue was “physically unable to accommodate the production of the show as it has been designed.” He’s since topped the charts with this eighth album, “Chromakopia,” which drew both raves and pans for being messy and chaotic. Lil Yachty and Paris Texas open.
Chase Matthew (Rivers Casino Event Center): The country singer from Tennessee who broke onto the charts in 2023 with “Love You Again” plays a show at Rivers Casino Event Center, North Shore. Matthew, seen on tour with Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan, released the EPs “We All Grow Up” and “Always Be Mine” last year and hit the country charts with “Darlin’.” John Morgan opens. 7 p.m. $39; riverscasino.com.
Saturday
theCAUSE (Thunderbird Music Hall): The Pittsburgh-based Grateful Dead tribute band does its annual D-Jam, benefiting Just Harvest, joined by two members of Chicago’s Dark Star Orchestra: guitarist Jeff Mattson and singer Lisa Mackey. 8 p.m. $25; thunderbirdmusichall.com.
KEA (The Frick Pittsburgh): The Pittsburgh-based soul artist will weave together music, poetry and visual elements reflecting on the legacy of racial history in America. Inspired by the latest exhibition, “Kara Walker: Harper’s Pictorial History of the Civil War,” it will feature iconic African American songs, original verse and percussion. 4 p.m. $50; $35 for members; $15 for students. The ticket price includes exhibition admission, a glass of wine (21+), and a meet-and-greet with the musicians. Advance registration and pre-payment are required at thefrickpittsburgh.org.
Saturday-Sunday
The Magnetic Fields (Carnegie Lecture Hall): The Boston indie-rock band led by Stephin Merritt is on tour celebrating the 25th anniversary (now 26) of the 1999 landmark album “69 Love Songs.”
“It's an album about love songs, which are very far away from anything to do with love,” he once told The Independent. The three-volume concept album will be performed over two nights at the Oakland venue. 8 p.m.; livenation.com.
