Best Pittsburgh concerts this week: Pantera, Foreigner, Lyle Lovett, Gov't Mule and more

TUEDAY

Gov’t Mule (Stage AE): The Southern rock band led by former Allman Brothers Band guitarist Warren Haynes stops at the North Shore venue on the Dark Side of the Mule Tour, performing a tribute to Pink Floyd preceded by a set of Mule staples along with songs from the band’s new 12th album, “Peace…Like A River.” Doors at 6:30 p.m. $39.50; ticketmaster.com.

THURSDAY

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band (Stage AE): The four-time Grammy-winning alt-country star from Texas arrives at Stage AE on tour with this Large Band, which features a horn section and backup singers. “12th of June,” his 12th album and first in a decade, is yet another seamless blend of jazz, country, western swing, folk, gospel and blues. There is reserved pit seating on the floor for $89.50 (a Stage AE rarity) and lawn tickets for $39.50. Doors at 6:30 p.m.; axs.com.

Steve Ludwig and The Casual Hobos (Schenley Plaza): Calliope opens a three-show series in Oakland with this band, led by singer-songwriter-guitarist Ludwig, that draws on traditional bluegrass and early country influences. 7 p.m. Free but suggested tip of $15; calliopehouse.org.

FRIDAY

Pantera/Lamb of God (The Pavilion at Star Lake): Original frontman Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown lead the thrash metal band from Arlington, Texas, on this reunion tour opening at Star Lake. Replacing their two deceased members — guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott and drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott — are Black Label Society’s Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante of Anthrax. This will be the first Pantera show in Pittsburgh since the band played the Civic Arena in 2001, two years before it split. Anselmo has since been back with his spinoff bands Down and Superjoint Ritual. They are joined by fellow metal heavyweights Lamb of God. 7 p.m. $39.50; ticketmaster.com.

The Commonheart (Stage AE): The soul-rock band led by singer Clinton Clegg and guitarist Mike Minda is fresh off of a Midwest tour and should be properly warmed up for its annual summer gig at Stage AE. The tour supports their latest album “For Work or Love,” produced by Los Lobos’ Steve Berlin, whom they met just before the pandemic shutdown. They get strong opening from The Vindys and Beauty Slap. Doors at 6 p.m. Tickets are $25/$30; axs.com.

FRIDAY & SUNDAY

Free concerts: The Allegheny County Concert Series picks up at the South Park Amphitheatre on Friday with Fastball, the Austin power-pop band best known for “The Way.” At Hartwood Acres on Sunday, it’s the Hometown Night with Zack Keim (of The Nox Boys), Forestry Division (led by Andre Costello) and Ames Harding & Mirage. Both shows begin at 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY

Foreigner (The Pavilion at Star Lake): The band, which had its first hit in 1977 with “Feels Like the First Time,” is touring for the last time, so they say, and stopping in Burgettstown. Foreigner is down to one original member, 78-year-old founder and guitarist Mick Jones, who, like on other recent tours, has not made it to every show. Leading the British-American hitmakers is energetic singer Kelly Hansen, who took over for Lou Gramm in 2005. The Mike Reno-led Loverboy opens the show with “Working for the Weekend,” “Turn Me Loose” and other hits. 7 p.m. $29.50; ticketmaster.com.

Thunderbird Summer Jam (Hartwood Acres): The Thunderbird Music Hall sets up at Hartwood with a 50th Anniversary of the 1973 Summer Jam at Watkins Glen, N.Y., with The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead and The Band. Taking on the Allmans will be Butler Street Revival, featuring guitarists Mike Minda (The Commonheart) and Glen Strother (Norside Organ Trio), organist Randy Baumann (WDVE), John Pergal (The Pawnbrokers) in the role of the late Gregg Allman , pianist Bill Maruca (keyboards), bassist Dave Busch (Wreck Loose), drummer Shawn McGregor (The Commonheart), percussionist Dino Lopreiato (Chaibaba), and organist Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones). Chest Fever, comprised of members of the San Diego Music Award-winning rock band Mrs. Henry, will cover The Band, and Pittsburgh’s theCAUSE will deal with the Dead. It begins at noon. Tickets are $40 Early Bird (General Admission); $60 day of show; thunderbirdmusichall.com.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY

Pittsburgh Blues and Roots Festival (Friday-Saturday): Tommy Castro, King Solomon Hicks, Joslyn & The Sweet Compression and Gabe Stillman headline the 6th annual festival presented by Band Together Pittsburgh, the nonprofit that uses music to enrich the lives of those on the autism spectrum. It takes place on two stages at the Pittsburgh Shrine Center in Cheswick. The bill also features local artists The Shriners, Blues Attack, The Polkamaniacs, Xavier Allen Band and more. Tickets are $35; $45 at the gate; $60 for weekend pass. Those 16 and under are free; pghbluesfestival.com.
