Best Pittsburgh concerts this week: Cody Jinks, Michael Franti, UB40, Kehlani, Skull Fest and more

After a weekend with three stadium concerts, things tone down here just a little bit...if you wanna call Skull Fest toned down.

TUESDAY

Kehlani (UPMC Events Center): The sultry, Grammy-nominated R&B/neosoul singer from Oakland, Calif., has collaborated with Cardi B, Justin Bieber and Post Malone, among others, along with appearing on the “Suicide Squad” and “The Fate of the Furious” soundtracks. She is on tour with her third album, “Blue Water Road,” which she called “an emotional journey, a sexual journey, and a spiritual journey.” With Rico Nasty and Destin Conrat. 8 p.m. $46.50; ticketmaster.com.

Dashboard Confessional/Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness (Stage AE): The Hello Gone Days Tour pairs emo legends Dashboard Confessional, led by Chris Carrabba, with indie-rocker McMahon, who expanded his sound after working in Jack’s Mannequin and Something Corporate. Dashboard is touring behind “All The Truth That I Can Tell,” which Rolling Stone called their “most old-school Dashboard-y collection in years.” McMahon has spent some of his days this summer opening for Billy Joel. Cartel opens. 6 p.m. doors. $45; axs.com.

The Zero Boys play Skull Fest 12.

WEDNESDAY

Shovels & Rope (Mr. Smalls): The Americana label is a big umbrella that ranges from gentle folk to roots rock. Shovels & Rope, the South Carolina-based husband-wife duo of Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent are definitely on the rougher side of the ledger. Fittingly, No Depression called them “barroom Americana.” They hit Millvale with the new album, “Manticore.” Jack Broadbent opens. 7 p.m. $22; ticketweb.com.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY

Skull Fest 12 (multiple venues): This makes a dozen for the hardcore/punk/metal festival that started in 2009, with a joke name, as a one-day event to celebrate a birthday at Belvedere’s in Lawrenceville. It sprawls across multiple venues with appearances by rAdolescents (ex-members of The Adolescents performing the self-titled 1981 “Blue Album” in its entirety), Indianapolis hardcore band Zero Boys, British punks Chaotic Dischord, The Pist, Defiance, Reality Crisis, Hellshock, YDI, Ignorants, Algara, Ignorantes, No Time, Hounds of Hate, Subversive Rite, Population Control, Armor, Rebelmatic, Haldol, Minority Threat, Cruelster, NYX Division, Dollhouse and more. See the schedule at the bottom of this file.

SATURDAY

Cody Jinks (UPMC Events Center): The outlaw country singer from Texas, arrives at the UPMC Events Center in Moon touring with his 11th album, “Mercy,” which was released along with “None The Wiser,” a metal record with his band Caned By Nod. Upon their release, Jinks said of the dual projects, “Literally, it was being in one studio and walking next door and going from this beautiful country song that we’re doing to just this really angry metal song, flipping a switch. The actual art of writing was the only thing I really had to focus on to keep myself sane…the song comes first. If I’m not writing a great song, then I’m dead in the water. I really, really focused on being a better wordsmith.” He joined by Whitey Morgan and Erin Viancourt at 7 p.m. $38; ticketmaster.com.

Rock, Reggae & Relief (Downtown)

British pop-reggae band UB40, who had hits in the ’80s and ’90s with covers of “Red Red Wine,” “(I Can't Help) Falling in Love with You” and “I Got You Babe” headline this annual urban festival on Forbes Avenue, near Market Square, Downtown. The band features four original members — guitarist Robin Campbell, bassist Earl Falconer, drummer Jimmy Brown and percussionist Norman Hassan — with Matt Doyle (who joined in 2021) taking over lead vocals. Also on the bill are The Original Wailers (featuring Al Anderson), The Movement, Maxi Priest, Big Mountain, The Elovaters and more. Proceeds benefit Café Momentum Pittsburgh, a restaurant and culinary training facility that provides holistic support to justice-impacted youth. It begins at 12:30 p.m. UB40 headlines at 9:30 p.m., followed by an after-party with Roots of Creation. Tickets are $20 to $250; rockreggaerelief.com.

Cindystock (Wexford)

The annual charity event at the Wexford home of founders Cindy and Ted Yates features Orlando, Fla., singer-songwriter Cat Ridgeway with Pittsburgh band Blues Attack, singer-songwriter Mark Ferrar, Miguel Sague III and Maura Elyse. The $50 admission includes full dinner buffet and soft drinks and benefits Cancer Hope. It begins at 4 p.m.; cindystock.org.

SATURDAY-SUNDAY

Laurel Highlands Bluegrass Festival (Laurel Hill State Park): This annual bluegrass festival is set in the 4,000-acre Laurel Hill State Park in Somerset County with seven bands, artisans, food vendors, period reenactors, children’s activities and wagon rides. There will be performances by Echo Valley, Nu-Blu, Colebrook Road and Marshele Bradford Exchange on Saturday (11 a.m.-7 p.m.) and Robert Mabe Band, Midnight Rooster and Tiger Maple String Band on Sunday (1-5 p.m. Sunday). Admission is free; laurelhillbluegrass.com.

SUNDAY

Michael Franti & Spearhead/Arrested Development

Hartwood Acres presents its biggest show of the season with Franti, the reggae-rocker who originally was set to open on the Kenny Chesney tour before it was rescheduled multiple times. The former member of the Beatnigs and the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy brings his own form of sunshine with songs like “Everyone Deserves Music,” “Say Hey (I Love You),” “Hey Hey Hey” and “I'm Alive (Life Sounds Like).” He’s joined by Arrested Development, the Atlanta hip-hop outfit led by co-founder and frontman Speech. It begins at 7:30 p.m. Free.
