Best Pittsburgh concerts this week: Tool, Ministry, Lotus, Beatles tribute, Son Volt and more

TUESDAY

Tool (PPG Paints Arena): The progressive metal band blew us away on the Fear Inoculum Tour (in November 2019), which may have been one of the last shows people saw before the pandemic shut things down. Tool, led by the mercurial Maynard James Keenan, now returns with retooled setlist that includes such deep cuts as “The Patient,” “Eon Blue Apocalypse” and “Opiate.” Fans are being ejected for taking photos, so keep those phones down. With The Acid Helps. 7:30 p.m. $56.75; ticketmaster.com.

Son Volt (Mr. Smalls): The prolific alt-country band led by Uncle Tupelo co-founder Jay Farrar returns on a tour supporting 10th studio album, “Electro Melodier,” last summer’s follow-up 2019’s “Union.” With this tour, John Horton of the Bottle Rockets takes over for guitarist Chris Frame, who left Son Volt in 2021. In the opening slot is Jay’s nephew, Jesse Farrar, from the string band Old Salt Union. 8 p.m. $25; mrsmalls.com.

WEDNESDAY

It Was Fifty Years Ago Today (Carnegie of Homestead Music Hall): Not your average Beatlemania, this supergroup features Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Denny Laine (The Moody Blues, Wings), Jason Scheff (ex-Chicago) and Jay Demarcus (ex-Rascal Flatts). They will pay tribute to “Rubber Soul” and “Revolver” while also playing some of their own hits. Laine said in a statement, “The Moody Blues met the Beatles in the early ’60s and were invited to join them on their second British tour. The thought of performing some of their classic songs with such a revered cast on this tour will bring back not only those moments in time but also fond memories as a member of WINGS. I trust that we will pay due credit to their timeless legacy by bringing back that music to everyone who joins us for this special ride.” 8 p.m. $59.75-$89.75; druskyentertainment.com.

THURSDAY

Patrick Droney (Thunderbird Cafe and Music Hall): The LA-based singer-songwriter who won a Robert Johnson New Generation Award for Best Young Blues Guitarist at 13 took his cues from the likes of Bon Iver and The National for his debut album, “The State of the Heart.” With Morgxn. 8 p.m. $15/$20; thunderbirdmusichall.com.

FRIDAY

Ministry (Stage AE): The industrial metal pioneers from Chicago hit the North Shore on their Industrial Strength Tour still celebrating the 30th anniversary of seminal fourth album “The Mind Is A Terrible Thing To Taste.” Led by lone original member Al Jourgensen, Ministry will also support “Moral Hygiene,” a politically charged 15th album that was released last year with the rhythm section of Tool bassist Paul D'Amour and Stone Sour drummer Roy Mayorga and guest vocalist Jello Biafra. Grunge pioneers Melvins join the fun, having released two albums in 2021, “Working with God” (a reunion of the 1983 lineup) and “Five Legged Dog (the band’s first-ever acoustic record). Doors open at 6 p.m. and it begins with Corrosion of Conformity. Tickets are $39.50 advance, and $45 at the door; axs.com.

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats (Roxian): The British stoner-rock band, described as sounding like "the original Alice Cooper band jamming in a cell with early Black Sabbath and the Stooges,” arrives in McKees Rocks, touring behind 2018’s “Wasteland.” 8 p.m. $27.50; ticketmaster.com.

FRIDAY-SATURDAY

Lotus (Mr. Smalls): “On a given weekend [Lotus] could be the only group with guitars at an all electronic music festival and then the next night crash a traditional rock festival with their dance heavy beats, synths and samples.” That description, from the band based in Denver and Philadelphia, offers insight on what to expect at Mr. Smalls this weekend. Fans will get a taste of latest album “Citrus,” along with Lotus favorites, at these shows that had been pushed back from late December. They begin at 9 p.m. $35; mrsmalls.com.

SATURDAY

Lindsay Dragan Band (The Funhouse at Mr. Smalls): The indie/folk/pop band led by the Pittsburgh singer-songwriter-poet — who left here for a while to live in Arizona and Brooklyn — releases “The Forests, The Mountains, The Desert At Night,” the full-length follow-up to 2014’s “Be Good To Yourself.” 7 p.m. $10; mrsmalls.com.

SUNDAY

Wilderado (Thunderbird Cafe and Music Hall): The jangly indie-rock trio trio from Tulsa, which has played Lollapalooza and toured with The 1975, Mt Joy, Band of Horses, and Lindsey Buckingham/ Christine McVie, pulls into Lawrenceville with a self-titled debut LP produced by James McAlister (Sufjan Stevens, Taylor Swift), Chad Copelin (Broncho, LANY) and Angelo Petraglia (Kings of Leon). With Flipturn. 8 p.m. $18; thunderbirdmusichall.com.
