North Side sculptor Thaddeus Mosley is among three artists whose work will be included in the 2018 Carnegie International, the Carnegie Museum of Art announced Wednesday.
The other two artists who were revealed are Kenyan native Mimi Cherono Ng’ok and the Vietnam-based collective Art Labor working with seminal video and performance artist Joan Jonas.
The 57th edition of the international exhibition of contemporary art will open Oct. 12, 2018, and continue through March 25, 2019, at the museum in Oakland. But in some ways it has already begun, by design of curator Ingrid Schaffner.
She has revived the format of Tam O’Shanter Drawing Sessions to create a programmatic thread leading up to and continuing throughout the exhibition. Begun in 1929 as art classes for youth, the current adult sessions will be conducted by artists and organizers of the international.
Mr. Mosely will lead one session from 2:30-4 p.m. Sunday, providing inspiration via a slideshow of his sculpture and personal collection of jazz records. Register for the session at cmoa.org/calendar. The cost is $10, $8 for members, $5 for students. No previous experience is required.
Mr. Mosley has lived and exhibited in Pittsburgh for 65 years, including at The Carnegie, Mattress Factory and as Artist of the Year in 1979 at Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. His “Georgia Gate,” which is in the Carnegie’s collection, is in the current exhibition “20/20: The Studio Museum in Harlem and Carnegie Museum of Art.”
Also announced Wednesday was the Travelogue Series (2018.carnegieinternational.org), an online portal built and designed by Project Projects for the international. The current entries, based on research trips taken by Ms. Schaffner, are created by writer and critic Emmanuel Iduma and artist Maira Kalman.
Preparation for the internationals generally includes frequent travel, intensive research, scholarly essays commissioned for the accompanying catalogs and visits by exhibiting artists to Pittsburgh. These activities have usually been behind the scenes. The Travelogue Series and Ms. Schaffner’s programming promise to open the show and its ideas to a larger audience and to keep it in the public eye for more than its limited gallery run.
