Boston Red Sox assistant hitting coach Andy Barkett removed himself from consideration for the Pirates’ vacant hitting coach job, according to a source.
The Pirates had planned to interview Barkett for the position. The Red Sox held their championship parade Wednesday after defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday to win their fourth World Series since 2004.
The Pirates fired hitting coach Jeff Branson and assistant hitting coach Jeff Livesey after the season. They scored 4.3 runs per game, tied for eighth in the National League, and finished 13th in home runs.
Barkett, 45, managed Class AAA Indianapolis last season after joining the organization the year before as the assistant minor league hitting coordinator. He just completed his first season with the Red Sox.
