One mobile defenseman will get his first crack at the Penguins lineup after another was hurt during his.
The Penguins recalled David Warsofsky this afternoon and placed fellow defenseman Derrick Pouliot on injured reserve.
General manager Jim Rutherford said Pouliot’s injury, which is undisclosed but not considered to be short-term because of the IR designation, will keep him out “for a period of time.”
Pouliot, seeing his first game action of the 2016-17 season, played 12 minutes, 29 seconds Thursday in the Penguins’ 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks at PPG Paints Arena. He registered one shot on goal, one hit and a blocked shot, but his final shift ended at 15:59 of the second period.
Fellow defenseman Olli Maatta’s last shift ended at 12:48 of the second period, but Rutherford said Maatta has been cleared for Saturday’s game at Nashville.
Neither injury is known, nor are the causes.
Warsofsky, 26, played in the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins’ only game of the season — and shined. He had a goal and an assist and was a plus-3 during a 6-2 win over Hartford.
Warsofsky played 12 games for the Penguins last season and scored once before New Jersey claimed him off waivers on Feb. 29. He had one assist in 10 games with the Devils.
“Warsofsky came out of camp as the eighth guy,” Rutherford said. “He was the last guy to be sent down. I think everyone’s familiar with him. He’s a good skater, a mobile defenseman.
The Penguins' top defenseman, Kris Letang, is day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The Penguins are off today.
