Pirates recall A.J. Schugel, option Adam Frazier to Bristol

MILWAUKEE — The Pirates fetched right-hander A.J. Schugel from Class AAA Indianapolis this morning and sent infielder Adam Frazier to Class A rookie-level Bristol. Frazier can return to the Pirates after their off day Thursday, since Bristol’s season ends Friday.

Schugel had a 3.86 ERA over 49 innings pitching in relief for the Pirates earlier this season. He was optioned July 29 and made 13 appearances for Indianapolis, posting a 4.00 ERA.

The Pirates will need to make another roster move Monday when they recall left-hander Steven Brault, who will start the series opener against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. They could make another paper move, sending a rookie to the low-level minors. They also could move right-hander Gerrit Cole to the 15-day disabled list should his elbow injury require additional time off.

General manager Neal Huntington said Cole alerted the Pirates after his last start that he was feeling discomfort on the outside of his right elbow. Cole ran sprints in the Miller Park outfield this morning and will head later today to Los Angeles, where he will see an elbow specialist. He declined to comment on the injury until after the doctor’s visit later this week.
