Shippensburg rolled up 489 yards of total offense and held off a late California rally in winning its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference title since 1981 yesterday at Seth Grove Stadium in Shippensburg, Pa.
The Vulcans, who won the PSAC West title, had an eight-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 8-3 with the 42-35 loss. Shippensburg is 9-2.
Shippensburg quarterback Chad DiFebbo connected on 18 of 24 passes for 294 yards and four touchdowns. Kevin Marshall rushed for 90 yards on 14 carries and scored on a 9-yard run.
Josh Portis completed 24 of 48 passes for a career-high 305 yards and two touchdowns for California. A.J. Jackson hauled in 10 passes for 133 yards.
The Red Raiders took a 42-14 lead when Mike Frenette scored on a 32-yard run with 9:58 left to play, but California made things interesting with three consecutive touchdowns.
Freddie Bacco scored on a 46-yard run at 9:18 and Terrance Moore pulled in a 6-yard pass from Portis with 5:01 remaining. The Vulcans' final score came with 44 seconds left when Jackson caught a 12-yard touchdown pass from Portis.
California will find out today if it will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II playoffs.
IUP 34, Kutztown 32: Craig Burgess kicked a 41-yard field goal with five seconds remaining to give the Crimson Hawks (5-6) the PSAC win at Kutztown (3-8). Burgess also kicked a 40-yard field goal for IUP.
Clarion 32, Cheyney 12: Tyler Huether completed 14 of 17 passes for 175 yards and a score as Clarion (8-3) won the PSAC game at Cheyney (0-11). Jacques Robinson caught eight passes for 104 yards for Clarion, which has a six-game winning streak.
? East Stroudsburg 54, Slippery Rock 28: The Rock (6-5) trailed 40-14 at the half in the PSAC game at East Stroudsburg (8-3). Damarcus Cleckley rushed for a career-high 169 yards on 30 carries for Slippery Rock.
Thomas More 21, Geneva 12: Thomas More (9-0) scored two second-half touchdowns to edge visiting Geneva (7-2) in a Presidents' Athletic Conference contest. Geneva was held to 72 yards rushing and 256 yards total offense. David Girardi completed 21 of 33 passes for 184 yards for the Golden Tornadoes.
Washington & Jefferson 49, Bethany 0: Brian Baldrige rushed for a career-high 131 yards and two touchdowns as W&J (8-1, 4-1) won at Bethany (2-7, 1-5) in PAC action. Bethany was held to 299 total yards.
Grove City 38, Westminster 31: Luke O'Mara caught touchdown passes of 28, 36 and 21 yards to lead Grove City (4-5, 3-2) to the home PAC win against Westminster (3-6, 2-4). His catch with 2:47 remaining broke a 31-31 tie. Grove City quarterback Andrew DiDonato completed 20 of 31 passes for 365 yards and two TDs.
Waynesburg 38, Thiel 17: Quarterback Brad Dawson completed 23 of 37 passes for 306 yards and three scores as Waynesburg (5-5, 2-3) won the PAC game at home.
Case Western Reserve 34, Carnegie Mellon 17: Tartans quarterback Phil Pantalone completed 11 of 17 passes for 118 yards but it wasn't enough as visiting Case Western (9-0, 2-0) defeated Carnegie Mellon (5-4, 1-1) in a University Athletic Association game.
Robert Morris 13, Albany 10: The Colonials (3-6, 3-3) won their third consecutive game in the Northeast Conference. Garrett Clawson kicked a 20-yard field goal as time expired to give Robert Morris the victory at Albany (6-4, 5-2). The Colonials held on to the football for the final 5:38, driving 79 yards in 14 plays. Clawson kicked a 39-yard field goal in the second quarter with seven seconds left.
