WPIAL Class AAAA Roundup: North Hills shut downs McKeesport
Takes advantage of turnovers in win against fifth seed

North Hills stood its ground and its defense shut out fifth-seed McKeesport through the final three quarters to post a 19-7 first-round upset.

The Tigers (7-3), who entered the playoffs ranked fourth by the Post-Gazette, took a 7-0 led in the first quarter when E'Vander Wright scored on a 65-yard dash.

The 14th-seeded Indians (5-5) took advantage of two turnovers and held their lead after going up 9-7 at the half.

Taylor Schmidt put North Hills on the board in the second quarter when he connected with Mark Devita on a 24-yard touchdown. Schmidt completed 10 of 13 passes for 98 yards.

North Hills kicker Anthony Chiappetta booted two key field goals to keep the Indians ahead. He notched a 32-yarder in the second quarter and followed with a 30-yard kick in the third quarter.

Schmidt capped North Hills' scoring with a 4-yard run in the final stanza.

Wright rushed for 88 yards on three carries for McKeesport.

Gateway 49, Plum 0

Rob Kalkstein threw for 203 yard and three touchdowns to guide the top-seeded and top-ranked Gators (10-0) to a first-round victory against the Mustangs (3-7).

Kalkstein, who surpassed the 6,000-yard career passing plateau, completed 8 of 10 attempts.

Steve Vranka caught four passes, including two touchdowns, for 104 yards.

Shaler 23, Mt. Lebanon 21

Jesse Della Valle carried the sixth-seeded Titans (9-1) past the Blue Devils (5-5).

Della Valle, who gathered 206 yards of total offense, scored three touchdowns. He rushed for 150 yards on 34 carries and caught a pair of passes for 56 yards.

Tyler Bills completed 8 of 13 passes for 126 yards for the Titans.

Mt. Lebanon's Luke Hagy led all rushers with 155 yards on 24 carries. He scored one touchdown on a 28-yard run in the second quarter.

Pat Goff threw for 108 yards for the Blue Devils. He completed 12 of 13 passes with one touchdown. He connected with Mike Martin on a 6-yard reception in the fourth quarter.

Woodland Hills 42, Baldwin 7

Lafayette Pitts scored a 64-yard touchdown on a fake punt in the second quarter and the second-seeded Wolverines (9-1) cruised past the Highlanders (2-8).

Dom Timbers paced Woodland Hills' running game with 127 yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. He scored on runs of 13 and 42 yards.

Tyler Marquis scored Baldwin's lone score in the fourth quarter on a 37-yard pass from Nathan Reed. Reed completed 4 of 23 attempts for 85 yards.

Bethel Park 49, Penn-Trafford 21

Bre Ford and Nick Kwiatkoski combined to rush for five touchdowns and 208 yards to help the third-seeded Black Hawks (9-1) top the Warriors (3-7).

Ford led all rushers with 115 yards and three scores on 10 carries. He scored on runs of 1, 36 and 5 yards.

Kwiatkoski scored two touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards on 10 carries.

Penn-Trafford quarterback Zach Emerick completed 10 of 18 attempts for 146 yards. He connected with Nick Markovic on a 30-yard score in the second quarter. Emerick also scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter.

Bethel Park's Matt Bliss threw for 96 yards and one touchdown. He completed 5 of 9 passes.

North Allegheny 47, Latrobe 0

Grant Huckestein scored three touchdowns in the second quarter as the fourth-seeded Tigers (9-1) rolled past the Wildcats (4-6).

Huckestein opened the second quarter with a 6-yard touchdown reception from Justin Brozick and followed with a 2-yard touchdown run and then caught a 9-yard pass from Brozick.

Brozick completed 2 of 7 attempts for 114 yards.

Central Catholic 35, Seneca Valley 0

Arnell Farmer took control of the Vikings' running game and scored three touchdowns as Central Catholic (8-2) shut out Seneca Valley (5-5).

Farmer rushed for 99 yards on 12 carries and scored on touchdown runs of 6, 1 and 25 yards.

Dom Maggio and Anthony Nixon also added touchdowns for the Vikings.
