High School Roundup: West Allegheny in volleyball final

Only one defending champion remains in the WPIAL girls' volleyball playoffs, as two of the three defending champions were defeated last night in the semifinals.

West Allegheny, the defending champion and top seed in Class AA, earned its fourth title berth in five years with a 3-0 win against Blackhawk. The Indians will face No. 2 Freeport in tomorrow's title match. Freeport posted a 3-1 win against Mars.

In Class AAA, defending champion North Allegheny fell short of a return trip to the finals with a 3-2 loss to No. 2 seed Seneca Valley. The Raiders will face top seed Mt. Lebanon in tomorrow's title match. Mt. Lebanon defeated Pine-Richland, 3-1.

In Class A, defending champion Beaver County Christian was swept, 3-0, by Greensburg Central Catholic. The Centurions will face top seed West Shamokin in tomorrow's title match. West Shamokin posted a 3-0 win against Jefferson-Morgan.

All three championship matches, plus a consolation for third place in Class A, will be held at Chartiers Valley High School.

City League football

n Oliver advanced to the City League championship game with a 10-6 win against Perry last night at Cupples Stadium. Oliver (8-1) will face the winner of tonight's semifinal game between Schenley (7-1) and Brashear (7-2) in next week's title game.

Oliver scored first on a safety in the first quarter, then increased its lead to 10-0 with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Dante Jeter to Martise Smith. Perry (7-3) scored its only points in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard run by Greg McGhee.

WPIAL soccer

n Ty Trainor scored four goals to lead Seton-LaSalle (15-7) to a 6-3 win against Freedom (15-4-1) in the consolation for third place in the WPIAL Class A playoffs. The victory earns Seton-LaSalle a berth in next week's PIAA tournament.

In Class AA, West Allegheny (19-2-1) posted a 2-1 overtime win against Chartiers Valley (12-7-2) in the consolation. West Allegheny qualifies for the PIAA tournament. Tyler Graziani scored the winning goal.
