City League Soccer: Schenley boys, girls sweep title matches
Thursday, November 05, 2009

It was a Schenley clean sweep, as the boys' and girls' teams won City League soccer championships last night at Cupples Stadium.

Both teams won, 1-0, against rival Allderdice. It was Schenley's third consecutive league title in girls' soccer, and the third championship since 2002 for the boys, whose most recent title was in '05.

Schenley (11-4-4) won its eighth girls' title since 1999. An unassisted goal by Erin Miller stood up for 48 minutes. She notched her 12th goal of the season on a shot from close range late in the first half.

"After warm-ups, the girls were coming into the locker room and Erin asked to stay out for a little bit because she wanted to take some extra shots," Schenley girls' coach Kevin Shevitz said. "We fed her about 10 shots. So when she had an opportunity in the game in a [one-on-one] situation, she scored the game-winner. All of Erin's goals have been important, but I think she'll cherish this one a little more."

Shevitz credited his defense of goalkeeper Nubia Williams, defenders Seana Brown, Tess Drudy, Natalie Sorce and sweeper Sami Gregory for shutting down high-scoring Allderdice which defeated Brashear, 6-0, in the semifinals.

"We had our eyes on the center of the field for 'Dice," Shevitz said. "That is where their strength is from their forwards, through their midfield all the way back to Lilly [Freedman], their sweeper."

The teams tied twice in the regular season, but the Dragons (12-4-2) finished a half-game ahead in the league standings because Schenley tied Brashear in league play.

The boys' game appeared headed for overtime until junior forward D.J. Kouyate hit a low shot that skipped past Dragons goalkeeper Andrew Goleman with 7:13 left.

Neither team had many scoring opportunities. Allderdice's best chance came with 17 minutes left when Miguel Camacho-Horvitz lobbed a shot that barely went over the crossbar. Schenley (12-8) had five shots on goal, four on direct free kicks.

"D.J. has his own style of play and we try to give him a bit of freedom to make things happen," said Schenley coach Jeff Dugan. "He made some bad choices in the game ... but in the end, he got us the goal that we needed."
