Q: I read a while back that Devon Smith was timed at a 4.19 and 4.23 40-yard dash time. Why don't we try him at returning punts and kicks? Also, how much of an impact do you see him having in his future years at PSU?
Nathan Perkins, Nashville, Tenn.
MUSSELMAN: Smith, a true freshman, is by far the fastest player on the team. Graham Zug said earlier this year that Smith turned heads in practice by running a 4.19. Smith is listed at 5-foot-7, 153 pounds, but he is at least 2 inches smaller and 10 pounds lighter. He got off to a fast start with 75 all-purpose yards in the opener against Akron, when he returned kicks, played some wide receiver and even lined up in a split backfield with Evan Royster. Smith, however, missed the game against Illinois with a concussion. His totals in the past eight games aren't great -- 3 returns for 48 yards; 3 carries for 26 yards; 2 catches for 5 yards --- but he hasn't been on the field all that much. Smith figures to make a little bigger impact next season.
