Matt McCann

Keystone Oaks

This past week: McCann had 272 yards rushing and three touchdowns -- including the winning, 49-yard score with 1:45 remaining -- in a 27-20 victory against Sto-Rox in Class AA Century Conference play.

Check this out: A 6-foot junior, McCann leads the Golden Eagles with 1,211 yards rushing. McCann has scored 17 touchdowns, plays defense and kicked two extra points this season. Keystone Oaks (7-1) has clinched a playoff spot.

How did you get your start playing football? Well, at first my dad got me into flag football. ... At fifth grade I started playing tackle, but flag football really helps. It lets you get moves and agility and quickness. It's probably harder to grab somebody's flag than it is to tackle somebody.

Who is your favorite all-time athlete? Probably Barry Sanders. I definitely watch him on YouTube all the time. The way he made people miss, it was just ridiculous.

Do you model your play after any athlete? Usually on defense. I like Virginia Tech and Cody Grimm, he's their strong safety, I just like how he gets after it on the field.

Do you still go trick-or-treating? No. I probably stopped at about sixth or seventh grade.

What was your favorite Halloween costume? I was a headless horseman one time. That was pretty good.

What are your future plans? I would love to play football in college. That's my ultimate goal.

People would be surprised to know that ... I have epic pingpong battles with coach [Nick] Kamberis. He used to beat me all the time, but I've been making a comeback.

Megan Junker

Peters Township

This past week: Junker's six saves helped the Peters Township girls' soccer team blank Mars, 2-0, in a WPIAL Class AAA first-round playoff game Tuesday night.

Check this out: In her four years as the Indians' starting goalkeeper, she has produced a school-record 54 career shutouts, including 13 this season to help the Indians roll to a 16-1-2 record. Junker will play next year at Division I St. Bonaventure.

Of your many shutouts, does one stick out as meaning the most? Well, all the really tough games. And I would say the Bethel Park game this year when we tied them, 0-0. It was unfortunate that we tied and didn't win the section, but as a goalkeeper I did what I had to do to give us a chance.

What's the hardest part of being a goalkeeper? Definitely the mental part. Ninety-percent of the game you're not touching the ball or in the action. Keeping the mental focus and being able to turn it on when you get a shot is tough.

Is there a goalkeeper you look up to or model your game after? Well, for every girl it's [U.S. women's national team goalkeeper] Hope Solo. But I also love Peter Schmeichel, who was the [Denmark] goalkeeper. He was crazy, and he was amazing. I've watched videos of him on YouTube.

When's the last time you scored a goal? My freshman year. I had three goals against West Mifflin.

Which professional team have you seen play in person most recently: The Steelers, Penguins or Pirates? I went to a Pirates game this summer, but I've been telling my dad to get me some Penguins or Steelers tickets.

Why St. Bonaventure? Just the atmosphere, and I wanted to go to a college where I could play. Plus the coaching staff and the girls on the team. Everything clicked with me.
