The Fumbler is sad, and he is man enough to admit that he shed a tear when he heard about the season-ending foot injury to Wayne Capers.
The Chartiers Valley quarterback is one of The Fumbler's favorite players.
But, it got The Fumbler thinking back to his own injuries.
There was that time in T-ball The Fumbler was digging for worms out in right field with a Popsicle stick he kept in his back pocket and hit a rock.
Sprained wrist.
There was that time in Pop Warner football The Fumbler got run over -- out of bounds -- by a linebacker.
Torn ACL.
Incidentally, the officials didn't call a late hit either on that play! Well, they probably shouldn't have, because The Fumbler was so bad the only position his coaches would play him at was "holding the sticks."
And there was The Fumbler's most debilitating injury, one that limits him to this day.
His cousin, The Dribbler, bet him a Rita's Italian Ice that he couldn't play a round of golf barefoot last year.
You guessed it -- turf toe.
The Fumbler certainly isn't hurting with his prognosticating. He was 53-11 (.828 percentage) last week, and his season record is 267-62 (.811 pct.). Here are his thoughts on this weekend's top games:
North Allegheny (4-1 overall, 1-0 in conference) at Shaler (5-0, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- Shaler is in the top five in the WPIAL Class AAAA rankings. North Allegheny is trying to get back in the top five. Shaler's run defense will be the key to this game. Winner: North Allegheny.
Upper St. Clair (4-1, 1-0) at Bethel Park (4-1, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- The Fumbler believes these teams are just about even. The team that runs the ball with more success will win. Winner: Upper St. Clair.
Franklin Regional (4-1, 1-0) at Mars (3-2, 1-0), 7:30 p.m. today -- The Fumbler will be stopping at the Brighton Hot Dog Shoppe on Rt. 19 for one of their chocolate milk shakes and some of their great fries, before making the short jaunt to Mars. The winner of this game will end up Greater Allegheny Conference champions at the end of the season. Winner: Mars.
McGuffey (4-1, 4-1) at Jeannette (4-1, 4-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Jeannette lost last week at home to Charleroi. Jeannette has not lost two regular-season games in a row since 2000 and two home games in a row since 1991. Winner: Jeannette.
Steel Valley (4-1, 4-1) at Sto-Rox (4-1, 4-1), 7:30 p.m. -- Steel Valley has won four games in a row, but none of the wins came against a team with a winning record. This is the third consecutive tough game for Sto-Rox. Winner: Sto-Rox.
Aliquippa (4-1, 3-1) at Center (5-0, 4-0), 7:30 p.m. -- The Fumbler wants to know what's up with Center quarterback Preston Dawson? He is not hurt, but he has not played two of the past three weeks because of undisclosed reasons. If he does not play this week, Center will not win. Winner: Center.
