They spend a lot of time in one of the best-looking uniforms in the NFL, so it's no surprise the Pittsburgh Steelers have a sartorial game plan for their off-the-field activities. Each year they demonstrate a little of this sideline fashion sense during the Steelers Style fashion show and dinner.
"Coming off of a high-energy season, this year's Steelers Style is exciting because it is celebrating Steelers' tradition and bringing the show 'home,' " said Greta Rooney, wife of Steelers president Art Rooney II.
They are co-chairing the event with coach Mike Tomlin and his wife, Kiya, at Heinz Field, East Club. This is the first time the show will be held there. "We anticipate it will create an intimate setting with a high-impact visual twist," Mrs. Rooney said. The evening, which benefits UPMC Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and the Cancer Caring Center, is always a hit with fans and the families of the players. Tight end Heath Miller and cornerback Ike Taylor are the captains of the '09 catwalk. "Knowing that we are helping such worthwhile charities is motivation enough to get involved," said Mr. Miller. He admitted when the shoulder pads are off he is usually in jeans and a T-shirt.
"I like to dress casual whenever I can. It's rare that you will ever see me in a suit, but the fashion show is for a special cause, so I don't mind dressing up for a good reason," said Mr. Miller.
Mr. Taylor agreed, saying, "I usually wear whatever is comfortable, but I don't mind dressing up when the occasion calls for it. You will usually see me in sweats or loose-fitting clothing, but I don't mind cleaning up for a special occasion like the fashion show."
Punter David Sepulveda had a similar take on the whole dressing-to-impress thing. "I like to be comfortable, too. I wear Nike gear and sneakers most of the time. But I also enjoy getting dressed up occasionally, especially in my custom-fit suit," he said.
Casual and laid-back when it comes to their everyday wear, these Steelers are looking forward to being on the front line of fashion Thursday night.
"There is so much energy at the fashion show that it is impossible not to have a great time while helping such worthy cause," said Mr. Taylor. "I am honored to have been chosen to serve as a co-captain for this year's show."
"We were fortunate to have Reebok and American Eagle sponsor the fashions for the third year in a row. The formal scene, my favorite, will be kicked off with another Steelers-inspired gown designed by coach Mike Tomlin's wife, Kiya," said Mrs. Rooney. Fashions for players, families and models are courtesy of Nordstrom and Tuxedo Junction.
"I look forward to the formal scene, also, because fans do not often get to see the players dressed to the nines. It makes the whole experience larger than life," Mrs. Rooney said.
Cocktails and dinner begin at 6 p.m., and the boys of black and gold hit the runway tucked in and buttoned up at 8 p.m. For more information or tickets, call 412-802-8256.
