This Saturday, when we mark our nation's 233 year of independence many communities will celebrate with parades marching down the main street of town. There's a celestial parade taking place in the evening sky as well this week. The moon will march across the southern sky through the zodiac, the main street of the night sky.
Tonight, around 10:30 p.m. look to the southwest and you will find the first quarter moon in Virgo. To the upper left of the moon is Spica, the brightest star in the Maiden. The bright star that sits about 30 degrees to the right of the moon is actually the planet Saturn. By Thursday evening, the marching moon will have waxed to gibbous phase and lie in the middle of Libra, the Scales. By Friday evening, the moon will sit just to the right of Antares, the brightest star in Scorpius. The moon will continue its eastward march through Scorpius and Sagittarius over the holiday weekend before it's full on July 7.
