For golfers who want to live on one of the best courses in Pennsylvania, Totteridge in Salem, Westmoreland County, is a great draw.
Two single-family homes overlook the course's practice facility and much more.
"The view out the back is an extraordinary view of the surrounding farms in the area and Chestnut Ridge," said builder Jack Stavros. "There's a 20- [or] 30-mile vista out the back."
Near the first hole are 10 villas and coach homes that are being finished by Catranel Construction.
Six carriage homes will be built near the same hole by Greg Stone and Ted DeCesar. All have views of the golf course finished in 2001 and designed by architect Rees Jones, who has done several courses selected as venues for the U.S. Open.
"In Western Pennsylvania, the terrain is rather severe. ... Since he had 500 acres to work with, he was able to construct a course that was really playable," said project manager Armen Suny.
The development also includes 23 lots, all around three-quarters of an acre, starting in the low $60,000s. Those in the high $60,000s have golf-course views.
One of the two homes on the ridge above the practice facility is a red-brick house built by Heritage Homes. Priced at $559,000, it has four bedrooms, 4 1/2 baths and 3,200 square feet of living space.
It boasts a 30- by 28-foot master suite, Brazilian hardwood floors, a jetted tub in the master bath and a French country-style kitchen equipped with GE Profile stainless-steel appliances. The two-story family room has a wall of windows and gas fireplace.
On its left is a stone ranch-style house that has four bedrooms, two baths, heated floors and other energy-efficient features. A stacked-stone, two-sided fireplace serves the kitchen and family room. It has about 2,600 square feet of space and is priced at $380,000.
The six stone carriage homes to be built near the first hole start at $269,000 and will range in size from 1,660 to 2,880 square feet. Buyers will not have to worry about cutting the grass or other maintenance. That will be covered by a condominium fee that has not been determined.
Like the carriage homes, the four nearby coach homes are on one level. They have three bedrooms and two baths and start at $219,900. The finished model is priced at $249,900. The six two-story villas start at $279,900 and have 2 1/2 baths, three bedrooms, a bonus room that could be a fourth bedroom and first-floor master suites.
The finished model costs $289,900. The other villas and coach homes are mostly finished, awaiting the buyers' choice of kitchen cabinets, counter tops and flooring.
Totteridge, which is in the Greensburg-Salem School District, is an eight-minute drive from Westmoreland Mall and five minutes from the courthouse in Greensburg.
"You're in this idyllic setting, but you are relatively close to all the services that you need," Mr. Suny said.
"We think that's what's exciting about the property."
