Celebrations Spotlight: Laura Capps and Fred Rihn
Tuesday, June 09, 2009

Fred Rihn, 30, and Laura Capps, 27, wed Aug. 29 at Saint Malachy Roman Catholic Church in Kennedy. Their relationship began on MySpace when Fred randomly sent Laura a message and she, thinking he sounded like a nice guy, responded. They now live in Ross.

Q: Where did you each grow up?

Laura: I grew up in Robinson Township and Fred grew up in Millvale.

Q: Who proposed? How?

Laura: Fred proposed at Light Up Night in 2006. He surprised me. I thought we were going to celebrate the night with a nice dinner and all of our friends. Turns out, he was planning to propose. It was so sweet. He did it in front of the Hilton right before the fireworks started and everyone around cheered and joined in the celebration.

Q: Where were you married? Why did you choose that site?

Laura: We were married at Saint Malachy Roman Catholic Church in Kennedy Township. It's where I was baptized and confirmed. Fred also comes from a Catholic family, so it was a good fit.

Q: Where's the reception and honeymoon? Why did you choose those sites?

Laura: Our reception was on the Empress, the former Party Liner of the Gateway Clipper Fleet. We chose the Empress because we had a lot of people coming from out of town and wanted to show off our beautiful city. It worked out perfectly. We even "educated" all of our guests about Pittsburgh sports legends by numbering our tables according to jersey numbers. Table #36, for example, was the Jerome Bettis table.

Q: Where did you honeymoon?

Laura: We honeymooned in Rivera Maya, Mexico. Neither of us had been there before and we found a great deal on an all-inclusive resort. It was a great way to relax and unwind after the craziness of the wedding.

Q: What was the best part? The worst?

Laura: The best part was celebrating our marriage with our family and friends. We are both so blessed to come from large families and to have wonderful friends. It was so much fun to have them all in one place and to celebrate together. I'd say the worst thing that happened was that part of the skin above my eyebrow was waxed off just days before the wedding by accident by my beautician. My make-up artist was able to cover it up pretty well for the pictures, but I could've lived without that happening!

Q: Who was the oldest guest? Who came the farthest?

Laura: Our oldest guest was my great aunt, Clara, who is at least 87 years old. The guests who came the furthest were my sister's boyfriend, now husband, Ben, who came from Italy and my good friend Jackie's boyfriend, Michael, who came from Switzerland.

Q: What was new, blue, borrowed at your wedding?

Laura: Almost everything was new -- jewelry, the dress, the shoes, etc. The ties that held my dress up in its bustle were blue. I borrowed one thing from each of my deceased grandmothers. I pinned a handkerchief from my maternal grandmother underneath my dress and incorporated parts of a hair clip that my paternal grandmother wore on her wedding day into my bouquet.

Q: What was the funniest thing that happened?

Laura: The funniest thing that happened was the bouquet/garter toss. After Fred's college friend and KDKA's traffic reporter, Jim Lokay, caught the garter, he had to put it on my sister, who had caught the bouquet. Then, our DJ had them switch it up and my sister put the garter on Jim! Obviously, Jim had to ham it up and we have awesome pictures of him with his leg in the air while my sister is sliding the garter down his leg.

Q: Who was your favorite wedding vendor? Why?

Laura: All of our wedding vendors were great, but I especially liked working with Ashley at Gateway Clipper Fleet. She went above and beyond to make everything perfect for us. She was patient and happily answered all of our questions. I felt like she took a personal interest in making our wedding everything we wanted it to be.

Q: What's the most creative wedding present you were given?

Laura: A friend of ours had our wedding invitation and a few of our engagement photos etched into a metal plaque. It was beautiful!

Q: What is one item of your spouse's that you wish you could throw out?

Laura: I have to choose just one? I would love to toss out his Xbox 360, all the video games that go with it and all of his old VHS tapes that are taking up storage space in our house.
