Where: Saltsburg, for its 28th annual Canal Days Festival today through Sunday.

How far: About an hour northeast of Downtown Pittsburgh.

What for: The annual Saltsburg Canal Days event is a weekend of food, crafts and entertainment, including fireworks over the Kiskiminetas River tomorrow night at 10. The festival celebrates Saltsburg's history as a major transportation hub. The Pennsylvania Main Line Canal linking Philadelphia with Pittsburgh had operated successfully in Saltsburg for 30 years before being supplanted by the railroad in 1882 when tracks were built on the leveled and dried up canal bed. The Saltsburg Canal site is on the National Register of Historic Places.

One of the most popular activities is the Saltsburg Library's annual Duck Race -- scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday -- at which plastic ducks are numbered, thrown into the river and carried by the current to the finish line. Throughout the weekend there also will be Civil War re-enactors, a hometown parade (noon to 1 p.m. tomorrow), a quilt show, train rides, bands, herb society plant sales, etc.

Fun factor: 6, for lots of old-fashioned fun.
