It's easy to imagine the now abandoned Fort Pitt Steel Casting plant in McKeesport as a place that was once full of noise. It was, for decades, a state-of-the-art foundry where molten metal was formed into tools and parts for a rapidly growing country. On a warm spring day last week, however, the only sound was the persistent buzzing of bees. The plant closed in the mid-1980s. On the shop floor, a pile of hard hats remains as one of the few reminders that hundreds of people once toiled here.
