Inspectors reviewing tapes of fight at Shuman
Friday, August 29, 2008

State inspectors were at Shuman Juvenile Detention Center Wednesday to review security tapes of an incident Monday evening.

More than two dozen teen residents reportedly were involved in an altercation in the gymnasium of the Lincoln-Lemington facility, resulting in injuries to several teens, including one who was kicked in the head and had to be treated at a hospital.

Stacey Witalec, spokeswoman for the Department of Public Welfare, said a fight broke out about 5:30 p.m. Monday during a basketball game. As staff intervened, a second fight broke out in another part of the gym. In that incident, Shuman staff had to cover one resident with their own bodies to prevent further injury by the other teens.

Ms. Witalec said the tapes indicated that Shuman met the required 1:6 staff-to-resident staffing ratio at the time of the incident.
