1 shot, 1 beaten in East Liberty attacks
Saturday, July 12, 2008

One man was shot in the head and another clubbed with a metal table leg in separate crimes that erupted within minutes of each other yesterday in East Liberty.

At 3:55 p.m., police found a man lying between 519 and 521 N. Euclid Ave., bleeding from a single gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian, where he was listed in critical condition last night, Pittsburgh police Lt. Dan Herrmann said.

Police haven't been able to identify the man and have only a vague description of the shooter, despite canvassing the area for witnesses.

"People out there say they don't know the guy," Lt. Herrmann said.

Neighbor Annie Johnson said she heard a lone gunshot after a brief conversation between two people, muffled by the sound of passing cars.

"When it died down, the last thing you heard was just, 'Give me something,'" Ms. Johnson said. Then, she said, a different voice responded, "I ain't got none."

Ten minutes earlier, in an unrelated incident, Ali Zahrich, 18, of New York, was dragged into an open convenience store at Penn Avenue and North Whitfield Street.

Witnesses told police they watched as two men pulled Mr. Zahrich into the store, shut the doors and clubbed him with a table leg, a "beating over a personal matter," Lt. Herrmann said. Police found Mr. Zahrich crumpled in the fetal position on the floor. He was able to point out his alleged assailants to officers before being transported to UPMC Presbyterian for treatment of lacerations and possible broken bones, Lt. Herrmann said.

Hitham Shoman, 22, of Penn Hills, and Yasin Shuman, 30, of Monroeville, are charged with aggravated assault, unlawful restraint and criminal conspiracy in the attack.
