Developer given deadline to raze Polish Hill building
Saturday, July 12, 2008

Told in November to raze a fire-damaged Polish Hill building, developer Wylie Holdings has until Aug. 11 to get it down or face fines, District Judge Ron Costa ordered yesterday.

The building, at 3109 Brereton St., burned Nov. 7 in a fire allegedly set by Duane Darkins Jr., son of the late city councilman. Pittsburgh's Bureau of Building Inspection ordered Wylie to tear it down by Nov. 14, but the Lawrenceville-based landlord did not, and the city filed a housing code case in May.

Wylie Holdings co-owner Ron King "has 30 days to have that building demoed. Otherwise, he'll be fined $1,000 per day," Judge Costa said yesterday. The fine meter is to start ticking on Aug. 11, when another hearing on the matter is scheduled in his Lawrenceville courtroom.

Judge Costa said he has been informed that insurers already paid Wylie Holdings' claim for the building, and that a contractor gave them a $16,000 demolition bid.

"Since the time frame has been so long on this, I would've hoped for [a fine] that was retroactive," said Terry Doloughty, president of the Polish Hill Civic Association.

Wylie Holdings officials declined comment.

City officials were considering yesterday whether to hire a contractor to tear down the building and then bill Wylie Holdings.
