David Forsyth, a teacher at Franklin Elementary School in the North Allegheny School District, has been accepted to participate in a workshop, "Landmarks of the Underground Railroad: From Christiana to Harper's Ferry."
It will be held at Dickinson College and is part of the Landmarks of American History and Culture Workshop Program, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
The workshops allow educators of children in kindergarten through grade 12 to engage in intensive study and discuss important topics in American history during one-week academies. This will be Mr. Forsyth's second national workshop. Last year, he participated in a program in Philadelphia that focused on Benjamin Franklin, during which he created packets of information for use in all grade levels.
Michael J. Dennehy Jr., chairman of the Pine board of supervisors, has been elected to a three-year term on the Executive Committee of the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors.
He was chosen by delegates to the association's convention in May in Hershey, Dauphin County.
Mr. Dennehy is president of the Allegheny County Association of Township Officials, where he has served as first vice president and secretary-treasurer. He also has served as liaison to the Police Pension Trust Committee and chief administrative officer of the township's nonuniformed pension plan.
Mr. Dennehy, a part-time administrator for a physical therapy office, is on the board of the Northern Regional Police Department; director and audit committee chairman of the Allegheny League of Municipalities; and is director of the North Pittsburgh Community Development Corp.
Melissa McGavick, of Cranberry, has received the 2008 Woman of the Year Award from the Women's Business Network Cranberry chapter.
The award is given for excellence and leadership in business or profession and for service to the community and organization.
Ms. McGavick, a member of the Women's Business Network Cranberry chapter, is president of McGavick Interactive Training, a company that works with business and individuals to increase revenue by teaching sales techniques, business etiquette and other skills.
She is a member of the board of directors of Women's Business Network, co-director of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Downtown Women's Club and a member of the Cranberry Area Chamber of Commerce. She holds a degree in communications, media studies from Penn State.
