National chain plans bar near new Westinghouse site
Bar Louie, seeking a young, professional demographic, may be first of ancilliary businesses drawn by firm's relocation

A restaurant and bar that boasts "warm surroundings with an urban feel" is on its way to Cranberry, anxious to meet the lunch and happy-hour needs of hundreds of new Westinghouse employees who will occupy the company's planned corporate headquarters a mile or so away.

"There's no doubt that that's our business demographic -- young business men and women," said Jason Cook who will be the manager of Bar Louie, which is expected to open in October.

He said the pending relocation of Westinghouse to Cranberry -- the shift from Monroeville is to begin in 2009 -- was "definitely a factor" considered when a location for the restaurant and bar was being picked.

Township officials have predicted that the Westinghouse relocation, which involves property tax abatement for the company for 15 years, would prove a boon for the territory as the firm would attract a range of ancillary businesses and spur residential growth.

Bar Louie, a national chain with close to 70 properties, will locate in Cranberry Mall, at the corner of Route 19 and Freedom Road. It will be on the lower level of the shopping plaza in space that formerly housed Green Acres furniture store.

Mr. Cook and Pittsburgh attorney Stanley J. Wolowski said the restaurant also considers families a main target audience, noting it will have a children's menu and highchairs.

"Cranberry has everything we're looking for. It's no secret it's a growing area, a population center,'' Mr. Wolowski said.

Cranberry supervisors have approved the transfer of a liquor license from Rowe's Country Tavern on Main Street in Saxonburg to the Bar Louie.

The restaurant opened in Chicago in 1991 and has two locations in Pennsylvania: Station Square and The Waterfront in West Homestead. The Cranberry location will be a franchise operation run by Cumberland Dining Group. Mr. Wolowski said the shareholders are local businessmen.

The restaurant will have 6,000 square feet of space with indoor seating for 169 patrons and an outdoor patio that can accommodate 40. The hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week.

Mr. Wolowski said the company describes its properties as being a "hip neighborhood restaurant and bar" and having "warm surroundings with an urban feel." The menu features pizza, oversized sandwiches, appetizers and specialty drinks
