The remaining concerts of the American Wind Symphony Orchestra season at the Highcroft Performance Center in Pine have been canceled.
At a board meeting on June 16, conductor and founder Robert Boudreau's request for eight summer concerts was denied by the Pine Township board of supervisors for reasons of public safety at the farm property, including lighting, parking and sanitation, according to township assistant manager Scott Anderson.
"In 1999, the board approved only six concerts," he said. "Prior to having additional concerts approved, Mr. Boudreau should have approached the board and addressed the concerns it had."
Boudreau, who owns the property, runs the orchestra that is best known for giving concerts on a barge.
He says the safety issues at Highcroft had been addressed:
"We wrote them a letter [the day after the board vote] that we had lighting, seven acres to park on, people to park the cars and porta-potties and received no response.
"I even went to the Pine Township office to talk with the manager, and I was told that she was not available.
"All they had to do was visit with me. I addressed every issue. It is important that we get these concerts."
The remaining concerts were to have been July 26 and 27.
Boudreau insists that Highcroft will eventually become the permanent home for the American Wind Symphony Orchestra.
