Steals gas, hits gas, hits tree, gets busted
Thursday, July 03, 2008

A teen from Moon was injured early yesterday when he crashed his father's Hummer while fleeing from police in the North Hills.

Mark Follen, 18, was treated yesterday at Allegheny General Hospital for an unspecified leg injury, Franklin Park police Chief Donald Dorsch said.

Police were on patrol at 1:16 a.m. when an officer spotted activity at the Clover Hill Golf Course.

When the suspect spotted the police cruiser, he jumped into the Hummer and sped off, Chief Dorsch said.

At the golf course, police found equipment for siphoning gas, items that Mr. Follen recently had bought from Kmart. Some 68 gallons of gas were reported stolen from a golf course fuel tank.

At speeds between 75 and 80 mph, Mr. Follen led police on a chase through McCandless to McKnight Road.

Police from Ross, Franklin Park, McCandless and Allegheny County joined the pursuit, which ended at Northway Mall at about 1:30 a.m., where the suspect crashed into a tree, causing the Hummer to roll several times, Chief Dorsch said.

Charges will include fleeing and eluding police, reckless endangerment, reckless driving, careless driving and possessing instruments of crime, he said.
