Tomorrow is America's 232nd birthday. In anticipation of the big party across the land, we asked some residents of neighborhoods in the Route 19 corridor the question: If you were to give Uncle Sam a birthday present, what would it be?
Their answers ranged from clever -- a new hair cut, a new hat and a polka party -- to the poignant "bring our troops home.''
"I'd love to give him Ronald Reagan again!"
-- Rick Mascara, 39, Bethel Park, an engineer for Bombardier Transportation, West Mifflin.
"Wisdom."
-- Mary Lou Michell, 79, Mt. Lebanon, a retiree.
"A big full-size truck that only gets 10 miles to the gallon."
-- Ben Moeller, 23, Bethel Park, scientist at Bechtel Bettis Labs, West Mifflin.
"A brand new red, white and blue hat -- a big one.
-- Aaron Borowitz, 28, Dormont, owner of Rita's Italian Ice, Kennywood Park.
"Peace. Bring the troops home from Iraq with victory and honor so we don't loose face. We need to honor the fallen soldiers."
-- Mike Janota, 55, Dormont, a supervisor at the Pittsburgh Housing Authority.
"Peace. I think that's what we need. Get our boys home. It's so hot over there."
-- Ruth Morris, 81, Upper St. Clair, retired.
"I'd throw him a big polka party and invite all of my friends and neighbors. We'd go crazy. All five of my kids met their mates at the polka dances."
-- Art Olszewski, 70, Mt. Lebanon, retiree.
"For all the troops in Iraq to come home."
-- William Boyd, 30, Mt. Lebanon, a counselor.
"Reduced gas prices."
-- Lisa Behanna, 36, Collier, a realtor for Howard Hanna in Upper St. Clair.
"Peace! Don't you think it's time for him to sit down and relax a little bit."
-- Rosemary Prostko, 64, Bethel Park, who does volunteer work.
"I'd take him to a barber shop and clean him up. Give him a mini fashion makeover. Update his look a little bit."
-- Iva Drasinover, 19, Mt. Lebanon, a sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh.
"Free gas!"
-- Melissa Birling, 27, Green Tree, a desk clerk at the Comfort Inn Suites in that town.
"Bring the troops home now! Be glad you are an American."
-- Roy Cavicchi, 59, Dormont, a salesman.
