Collier
Organizers of Community Days July 11-13 at Webb Field are looking for volunteers -- but not for the usual reason.
The Collier Community Days Committee and the Collier Friends of the Panhandle Trail are teaming up to thank individuals who help with volunteer work such as scouting, church work, fire protection, sports and recreation. The only criterion is that the volunteer give 50 or more hours a year in one or more activities.
Volunteers will be recognized during Community Days through public announcements and printed programs. Honorees also will be given tokens of appreciation for their help.
People may submit their own names, or nominate others, by visiting the Friends of the Panhandle Trail Web site, www.panhandletrail.org.
The deadline is Tuesday. Any names received after that date will be honored at the annual Rock the Quarry event Sept. 12-13.
Commissioners discussed the need Tuesday night for a fire lane ordinance for the township's three shopping centers after complaints about overflow parking that is spilling onto access roads at Collier Town Square and blocking access by emergency vehicles.
Commissioner Bob Schuler will look into the situation with codes officer Bob Caun and make recommendations to the board.
Also brought up was the need for a measure that would deter loiterers from using township parks, particularly Hilltop and Webb, after dusk.
Scott
Aiming to protect the status quo on its side of Forest Avenue, Commissioners June 24 agreed to advertise an ordinance that would establish 15 parking spaces between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Half of the street is in Scott and has commercial zoning, and the other half is in Carnegie, where the zoning is residential. Friction between the two sides erupted last year, with each accusing the other of parking infractions. The Scott side is occupied by an Advanced Communications, Inc./Comcast facility.
Carnegie last fall enacted an ordinance that created permit parking on its side of Forest between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.
Residents who applied for the permits were given vehicle placards and the area was posted for permit parking.
Adoption of Scott's proposed ordinance is expected on July 22.
Commissioners approved a $386,195 contract to Morgan Excavating to resurface these streets: Roessler, Nellis, Hoover, Kerr, Akehurst, Maryland, Willard, Spring Valley, Pierina, Summit and Somerville.
