Tuesday, July 01, 2008

A mosquito in Wilkinsburg has tested positive for the West Nile virus -- the season's first.

The state Department of Health said it will increase surveillance in the area to prevent the problem from spreading. No humans have yet been infected in Allegheny County.

The Allegheny County Health Department has been placing pesticides in 20,000 storm-water basins throughout the county to kill mosquitoes.
