City 'Tree Tender' workshops to begin
Monday, June 30, 2008

A summer schedule of Tree Tender workshops begins tomorrow for the first three of 16 targeted neighborhoods.

Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest will train residents on the proper care of young street trees. Residents in each cluster of neighborhoods will meet for evening sessions for three successive Tuesdays starting at 5:30 p.m. The workshops are $40 and include a meal.

Highland Park, Lawrenceville and Morningside are the first cluster, with sessions on Tuesday and on July 8 and 15 at the Morningside VFW. The next group is Carrick and the South Side starting July 29, but any city resident can sign up for a session in any neighborhood.

Participants will receive certificates and a Tree Tender vest upon completion. Neighborhoods with certified Tree Tenders who are able to organize neighborhood plantings will be eligible to receive 10 or more street trees.

Registration is open online at www.PittsburghForest.org/TreeTenders. For subsequent groupings and locations, contact Caitlin Lenahan at 412-362-6360 or e-mail caitlin@pittsburghforest.org.
