Stargazing: Holiday weekend horizons
Monday, June 30, 2008

This holiday weekend, divide your attention to both the eastern and western horizons after sunset. The crescent moon will join Saturn in the west, and Jupiter will enter the spotlight in the east.

Wednesday's new moon at 10:19 p.m. marks the start of the next lunar cycle. If you look in the west-northwestern sky Friday evening at dusk, you will find a very thin young crescent moon right above the horizon. By Saturday evening, the waxing crescent moon will sit about 8 degrees above the western horizon around 10 p.m. Lined up and in order, above and to the left of the moon, you will find Regulus, Mars and Saturn. By Sunday evening the crescent will sit just below and to the left of Saturn.

While your local holiday fireworks displays are coming to an end this weekend, don't forget to scan the southeastern horizon for Jupiter. The Jovian giant has returned to the evening sky and sits about 10 degrees above the horizon by 10:15 p.m.
