3 shot in North Braddock bar
Saturday, June 28, 2008

Police said three people were wounded, two of them critically, after a man opened fire in a neighborhood bar in North Braddock last night.

The shooting occurred about 11 p.m. last night in Crud's, 1400 Brinton Ave.

Police said one victim was shot in the head, one was shot in the chest and a third was shot in the foot.

Dave Riggs, 62, a bar patron, said he was watching the Pirates game on television in the bar when he saw a man with a gun in his hand at the door. Mr. Riggs said he tried to prevent the man from getting inside by pushing against the door and said the man then started firing.

He said the man was outside the door but his gun hand was inside and he fired off four or five rounds from what appeared to be a 9 mm handgun.

Mr. Riggs said the gunman was wearing a red bandana over his face.

It was not immediately clear what became of the gunman.

Another witness, Bill McCaffery, 35, said he was upstairs in the two-story bar when he heard a commotion on the ground floor.

Mr. McCaffery said about 25 people were inside the bar at the time of the shooting.

"I just saw he had his hand poking through the door. He just started shooting wildly," Mr. McCaffery said. "It was just chaos. People were hitting the floor."

Police from North Braddock, Forest Hills, Penn Hills and other nearby departments converged on the scene.
